In short. A solar powered blind is a motorized blind with a small photovoltaic panel attached near the window. The panel trickle charges the motor battery using daylight, so in the right position the blind effectively looks after its own power.
Solar is the right answer in one specific situation, and we would rather be clear about it than oversell. It is for windows where running power is impractical and where climbing up to recharge a battery is a nuisance.
Solar charging depends on how much daylight actually reaches the panel. Winnipeg has genuinely bright winters, often brighter than people expect, but the days are short and a north facing window gets no direct sun at any time of year.
So this comes down to the specific window. On a south or west facing window with a clear view of the sky, a solar panel comfortably keeps up. On a north window, or one shaded by a large tree or a neighbouring house, it will not, and we will tell you that at the measure and recommend a standard rechargeable battery instead. The battery still works normally either way, so a solar blind that undercharges does not stop functioning, it just needs an occasional top up like any other.
The measure is where this gets decided. We look at which way the window faces, what is outside it and how much sky the panel can actually see. If solar is not right for that window we say so, and nothing is lost by asking.
In practice, nothing. The blind behaves exactly like any other motorized blind, with a remote, a wall switch or an app. The only difference is that you are not thinking about the battery.
