Custom drapery layered with sheers in a Winnipeg home

In short. Drapery is fabric hung from a rod or track beside a window, rather than a blind fitted into it. It adds height, softness and warmth, and it is the one window treatment that meaningfully changes how a room sounds as well as how it looks.

What drapery does that blinds do not

A blind manages light. Drapery changes the room. Fabric hung from close to the ceiling draws the eye upward and makes a room read taller. It softens hard corners and hard floors, and it absorbs sound, which is why a room with drapery feels calmer than the same room with bare glass and laminate.

There is a practical side too. In a Winnipeg winter, a heavy lined panel over a large window is a real barrier against the cold coming off the glass, particularly in older homes.

Layering drapery over blinds

Most of the work we do here is layered rather than either or. A functional blind at the glass handles daily light and privacy. Drapery panels sit outside it and mostly stay open, framing the window and adding the softness.

  • Sheer panels behind solid drapery, for daytime softness and evening privacy
  • A roller or zebra blind at the glass with stationary panels either side
  • Full blackout drapery over a blind in a bedroom, for the darkest possible result
  • Ceiling mounted track that runs the whole wall, which makes a standard window look far larger

Height matters more than almost anything else with drapery. Mounting the rod close to the ceiling rather than just above the window frame is the single change that makes a room look taller and the drapery look deliberate. We will show you the difference at the measure.

Fabric, lining and fullness

Three things decide how drapery hangs. The fabric weight, whether it is lined, and how much fabric is gathered across the width. Skimping on fullness is the most common mistake in ready made curtains, and it is why they look flat. Because we make to measure, the fullness is specified rather than whatever came in the packet.

Lining adds body, improves how the fabric falls, protects it from sun fade and adds insulation. Blackout lining takes that further for bedrooms.

Measured and hung by us

Drapery is unforgiving about length. Too short looks like a mistake and too long looks untidy. We measure the actual drop from the mounted rod position to the floor in your home, make the panels to that, and hang them ourselves.

Curtains & Drapery Questions

For most rooms yes, either just skimming the floor or with a very slight break. Panels that stop above the floor tend to look accidental. We measure the real drop from the rod position in your home rather than working from the window size, so the length is right.

Yes, and it is what we fit most often. A blind at the glass handles light and privacy day to day, and drapery panels outside it add softness and height. The panels can be functional or purely decorative.

Yes. We supply and install the hardware along with the drapery, including ceiling mounted track where you want the fabric running the full height of the wall.

A lined panel over a large window makes a noticeable difference to how cold a room feels, especially in older Winnipeg homes with larger single pane or older double glazed windows. It is not a replacement for a window upgrade, but it is a real improvement in comfort.

It depends on the fabric, and we will tell you which applies to yours when we install. Most lined drapery should be dry cleaned rather than washed, because washing can shrink the fabric and the lining at different rates.
