Sheer shades layered with drapery in a Winnipeg home

In short. Sheer shades use a light, open weave fabric that scatters incoming daylight rather than blocking it. The room stays bright and the harshness goes out of the light, while people outside cannot see in clearly during the day.

What sheers are for

There is a specific problem sheers solve. You have a window you like, with a view or good light, and you do not want to cover it. But the sun is harsh at certain hours, or the room feels exposed to the street. A solid blind fixes that by taking the window away. A sheer fixes it while leaving the window as a window.

  • Softens direct sun without darkening the room
  • Daytime privacy from the street while you still get light and a soft view out
  • Reduces fading on floors, furniture and art by cutting direct exposure
  • Keeps a small room feeling open, where a solid blind would close it in

The honest limitation

Sheers do not give privacy after dark. Once it is brighter inside than out, an open weave fabric will show silhouettes. That is not a defect, it is what the fabric is. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.

So sheers on their own suit living rooms, dining rooms, kitchens, offices and hallways. For bedrooms and any room you use at night with the lights on, sheers should be layered with something solid rather than used alone.

The layered setup is the one we fit most: a sheer at the glass for the daytime, and drapery or a blackout blind over it for the evening. You get the soft daylight you wanted without giving up privacy at night.

Sheer shades or sheer drapery

Two different things that often get confused. A sheer shade is a fitted shade that raises and lowers inside the window, so it disappears when you do not want it. Sheer drapery is fabric hung beside the window on a rod or track, and it draws across.

Shades suit windows where you want a clean, uncluttered look and full use of the sill. Drapery suits larger windows and rooms where you want the softness and height that hanging fabric gives. We fit both, and often both on the same window.

Made to your windows

Sheer fabrics are less forgiving than solid ones, because light passing through shows any gap at the edges. Measuring properly matters more here than almost anywhere else, which is why we measure in your home rather than working from numbers over the phone.

FAQ

Sheer Shades Questions

No. Once it is brighter inside than outside, an open weave fabric will show silhouettes. Sheers give daytime privacy. For evening privacy they should be layered with drapery or a solid blind, which is how we usually fit them.

A sheer shade is fitted into the window and raises and lowers, so it disappears when open. Sheer curtains hang beside the window on a rod or track and draw across. Shades give a cleaner look and free up the sill, curtains add height and softness.

They reduce it considerably by cutting direct sun exposure, though no light filtering fabric eliminates fading entirely. For a room with valuable flooring or furniture in direct sun, a denser light filtering fabric will protect more than an open sheer.

Yes. Sheer shades can be built on a motor with remote, wall switch or app control, the same as our other shades.

On their own, no, because of the night privacy issue. Layered under blackout drapery or over a blackout roller blind they work very well, giving you soft light during the day and full darkness at night.
